Captain Fred,

Thank you for a most informative, practical article. I have always wanted to own a sailboat and I am now seriously considering it, hopefully by Memorial Day 2010.

I live in the San Diego area and there seems to be a lot of boats on the market, from LA to SD. Boats and pricing seem to vary quite a bit, especially for a novice like myself.

Your 10 tips have given me a good starting point as to what I should look at when I go look at a sailboat for sale. Your tip on looking at a lot of boats to know what you really want stands out. Although I see a lot of boats on Craigslist for sale in SoCal, I have been reluctant to actually go see them as I am not ready to buy. You have given me confidence to at least approach an seller

Again, thank you for sharing your wisdom. I truly appreciated it!

Captain Fred,
I have a 1983 Ocean Alexander which I believe has 10 of your portholes in her.
They are now 25 years old and some are in need of the sealing rubber gaskets.
Is there a source for these? I have six (6) which are large (15 3/8" wide x 81/4"
high. The other four (4) are smaller (13 1/2" x 6 1/4"). Only the large ones
have a patent number: 4112645.
They are still in great shape and it would be a shame to try and replace them.
Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. Please get back
to me even if no help is known to you,

Thank you, in advance.

I just discovered your great web site and look forward to continuing to read it.

So far I've looked at 3 and at this rate, looking may become my hobby rather than sailing.

Fred
Great advice. People look at the chartering advertisements, see all the idyllic locations, see the photo-cliches of boats apparently suspended in mid-air in sandy bays, and think it is all wonderful. The reality is that sailing is cold, wet, tiring and often very hard work. We sail in a HOSTILE environment. You are literally both out of your element and out of your depth; get it wrong and you could DIE. Perhaps that is the thrill, keeping control of potentially dangerous situations and still having the time of your life! Something landlubbers just do not understand. A good skipper is a Micro-Manager. Agreed?
Yawl have a good time,
